ABA Therapy
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. The goal is to increase behaviors that are socially significant to the individual learner, and decrease behaviors that are harmful or impact learning. ABA is a flexible treatment and can be adapted to meet the needs of each individual learner.
Studies have also found ABA to be beneficial for children with various developmental challenges, such as ADHD, ODD, and OCD. Moreover, ABA has proved to be a highly effective approach in teaching new adaptive skills to typically developing children who exhibit maladaptive behavior patterns.
Each ABA program is developed to meet the specific needs of each individual. Recognizing the uniqueness of your child, with their own set of strengths and challenges, we create a program specifically designed to meet your child’s individual needs. Our Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will conduct a thorough assessment of your child to devise a comprehensive treatment plan.
Caregiver Coaching
At Houston In-Home ABA Group, our team of dedicated professionals understand the pressures and difficulties that challenging behaviors can impose on the whole family. With this in mind, we work with all caregivers to develop a specialized program that positions parents as key facilitators of behavioral change. Our primary focus is to equip caregivers with the necessary skills to teach everyday skills to make daily routines less challenging and to facilitate lasting behavior change. This is an excellent option for families who do not need the full-time direct intervention offered through clinics, are on waiting lists for ABA services, those who do not have access to direct ABA services due to medical insurance limitations, or families seeking short term support.
School Consultation
Our team collaborates closely with your child’s school to enhance their performance as an independent learner. As applicable, we offer therapy directly in the school or daycare environment, teaching skills in the contexts where they are most relevant. If in-school support doesn’t suit your child’s needs, we offer consulting services to teachers and support staff and provide after-school support. This includes working on executive functioning skills, such as task initiation, maintaining focus, following instructions, increasing tolerance for less preferred tasks, organization, enhancing working memory, self-regulation, mental flexibility, and improving inhibitory control.
IEP Advocate Services
Understanding and managing the intricacies of IEP meetings and available support services for your child can feel like a daunting, full-time task. However, our team of professionals have decades of experience working in school settings and alongside educators. We understand the technical jargon and can help you to, also!
We provide IEP advocacy through a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who has hands-on experience in the school system. Our goal is to ensure every child gets the educational support they need. With our thorough understanding of special education and the best practices in behavior analysis, we stand as powerful allies for families. We guide them through the complex IEP process and strive to achieve the best educational outcomes for their children. A standout feature of our service is conducting school observations, where we observe students in their educational environment. This unique approach, using a behavior analytic perspective, allows us to comprehensively evaluate both the educational setting and the teaching methods involved, setting us apart from other advocacy services in the area. We are also qualified to complete Individual Educational Evaluations as needed or as requested through the IEP committee process.
Challenging Behavior Support
It is important to recognize that maladaptive behavior patterns can manifest in both typically developing individuals and those with developmental disorders. These behaviors do not have to be seen as “normal” or inevitable. Our approach focuses on teaching new skills to help individuals cope with being denied access to preferred items or activities, tolerate waiting and/or being told “no” or “not right now,” and/or not “getting their way.” While working to keep individuals in a state of being happy, relaxed, and engaged (HRE), we guide individuals in learning how to seek attention appropriately, smoothly transition between activities, make meaningful choices, and tolerate waiting. Additionally, we offer parents coaching that is grounded in values-based treatment and proactive strategies.
Social Skill Training
The success of a social skills program is dependent upon the cooperation and contribution of caregivers, professionals, and an individual’s support network. Our approach utilizes evidence-based methods to enhance children’s comprehension of social interactions and teach socially acceptable learned behaviors that enable an individual to interact with others in a manner that results in positive experiences and reduces the chances that an individual experiences a negative outcome.
Social skills are best taught across a variety of settings. Our skilled team, including board-certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) and behavior technicians (BTs), specialize in breaking down various skills and objectives. These range from learning to take turns to understanding nuances in tone of voice and body language. We structure training into clear, straightforward actions, ensuring they are easy for children to grasp. Our strategies involve setting measurable and achievable goals, which are progressively expanded upon as your child acquires new skills. Each step is designed to boost your child’s self-esteem.
Just like our other programs, each social skills training plan is tailored to the individual. The training varies based on the child’s age and specific needs, but often aims to teach specific social interaction skills such as turn taking, social initiations, asking a peer to join in an activity, responding to a peer’s request to join an activity, initiating a greeting, reading and understanding facial expressions and nonverbal social cues, maintaining reciprocal conversations, and more.
